| Parte | Estructura | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Condición (if-clause) | If / When + presente simple | If you heat water to 100 °C |
| Resultado (main clause) | Presente simple (o imperativo) | it boils |
| Orden inverso | Resultado + if + condición, sin coma | Water boils if you heat it to 100 °C. |
- Tercera persona: recuerda la -s del presente simple: If it rains, the grass gets wet.
- Negativa: con don’t / doesn’t: If plants don’t get water, they die.
- Unless: significa «a menos que» y equivale a if… not.
- Error típico: nunca se usa will en la parte del if: no *If you will heat ice.
- Instrucciones: la oración principal puede ir en imperativo: If you feel sick, call a doctor.

Tipos de condicionales en inglés
| Tipo | Estructura | Uso |
|---|---|---|
| Zero conditional | If + presente, presente | Verdades generales y hábitos |
| First conditional | If + presente, will + infinitivo | Situaciones futuras probables |
| Second conditional | If + pasado simple, would + infinitivo | Situaciones hipotéticas o improbables |
| Third conditional | If + past perfect, would have + participio | Situaciones pasadas que no ocurrieron |
La diferencia con el first conditional es clave: If you heat ice, it melts (siempre ocurre) frente a If it’s sunny tomorrow, we’ll go to the beach (una situación concreta futura). Para lo hipotético, consulta el second conditional.
Ejercicios resueltos
1. Completa: «If you (heat) butter, it (melt)».
If you heat butter, it melts.
2. Corrige el error: «If you will mix yellow and blue, you get green».
Sobra will: If you mix yellow and blue, you get green.
3. Traduce: «Si no riegas las plantas, mueren».
If you don’t water the plants, they die.
4. Transforma con unless: «If you don’t study, you don’t pass».
Unless you study, you don’t pass.
5. ¿Zero o first conditional? «If I see Tom tomorrow, I’ll give him the book».
Es first conditional: habla de una situación concreta del futuro y usa will.
6. Reescribe empezando por el resultado: «If you press this button, the door opens».
The door opens if you press this button.
If you heat ice, it melts».
¿Cuál es la estructura del conditional 0?
If + presente simple, presente simple.
Si empieza por el resultado, no se pone coma: «Water boils if you heat it».
