Past perfect
| Forma | Estructura | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Afirmativa | sujeto + had (‘d) + participio | They had gone. / They’d gone. |
| Negativa | sujeto + had not (hadn’t) + participio | They hadn’t gone. |
| Interrogativa | Had + sujeto + participio…? | Had they gone? |
| Respuesta corta | Yes, sujeto + had. / No, sujeto + hadn’t. | Yes, they had. / No, they hadn’t. |
| Forma continua | had been + verbo en -ing | They had been waiting. |
- Had es igual para todas las personas: I had, she had, we had.
- Aparece mucho con already, just, never, ever, yet, before, after, when, by the time y by + momento.

Past perfect frente a past simple
| Past simple | Past perfect |
|---|---|
| 63. When the teacher came in, the students stopped talking. | 64. When the teacher came in, the students had stopped talking.
When the teacher came in, the students were talking.
When I opened the fridge, I saw that someone had eaten my yogur.
- Usar el past simple como participio: She had went home → She had gone home; I had ate → I had eaten.
I had got up and had had breakfast → I got up and had breakfast.
- Confundir «he» con «había»: «Ya he terminado» es I’ve already finished (present perfect), no I had already finished, que significa «ya había terminado».
- Poner would en la parte del if: If I would have known → If I had known.
- Confundir ‘d: She’d left es she had left; She’d leave es she would leave.
- Usar did en la pregunta: Did you had finished? → Had you finished?
Ejercicios resueltos
1. Completa en past perfect: «When we arrived, the film ___ (start)».
When we arrived, the film had started. Empezó antes de nuestra llegada.
written, flown, broken, chosen.
3. Une las dos oraciones con because: «He was hungry. He hadn’t had lunch».
He was hungry because he hadn’t had lunch.
4. Pasa a estilo indirecto: «I have lost my keys», she said.
She said (that) she had lost her keys. El present perfect pasa a past perfect y my cambia a her.
5. Corrige el error: «If you would have called me, I would have helped you».
If you had called me, I would have helped you. Tras if se usa past perfect, no would have.
6. ¿Qué significa cada oración? a) «When I phoned, Ana left». b) «When I phoned, Ana had left».
Preguntas frecuentes
When I arrived, she had left).
Before y after ya indican el orden de los hechos, así que el past perfect es opcional: After she read the contract, she signed it y After she had read the contract, she signed it son correctas.
El continuo, had been + -ing, destaca su duración o sus efectos visibles: her eyes were red because she had been crying.
