El orden puede invertirse: If it rains, we’ll stay in = We’ll stay in if it rains.

Tipo Cláusula con if Cláusula principal Uso
Cero presente simple presente simple Verdades generales y rutinas
Segundo pasado simple would + verbo Situaciones imaginarias o poco probables
Tercero pasado perfecto would have + participio Pasado que no ocurrió
Mixto pasado perfecto / pasado would + verbo / would have + participio Mezcla de tiempos

En la cláusula principal, will y would pueden cambiarse por otros modales: can, could, might o may.

Ejercicios resueltos

★ Practica paso a paso

1. Completa (primer condicional): «If you ___ (call) me, I’ll pick you up».

Presente simple en la cláusula con if: If you call me.

2. Completa (segundo condicional): «If I ___ (be) rich, I ___ (buy) a boat».

Pasado + would: If I were rich, I would buy a boat.

3. Identifica el tipo: «If you freeze water, it turns into ice».

Verdad general con dos presentes: condicional cero.

Se imagina lo contrario de lo ocurrido: If I had known your address, I would have visited you.

5. Reescribe con unless: «If you don’t hurry, you’ll be late».

Unless sustituye a if… not: Unless you hurry, you’ll be late.

Condición pasada con resultado presente, condicional mixto: If I hadn’t lost my keys, I would be at home now.

Los modales cambian el matiz: can y could expresan posibilidad o capacidad (repasa can y can’t). Y para preguntas hipotéticas del tipo What would you do if…?, consulta las oraciones con what.

Preguntas frecuentes

Además existen variantes con unless, as long as, provided o la inversión.

¿Se puede poner will después de if?

En general no: se dice «If it rains», no «If it will rain». Solo se admite en casos especiales, como peticiones corteses («If you will follow me…») o cuando will expresa voluntad.

¿Se dice if I was o if I were?

Las dos se usan. If I were es la forma tradicional y la preferida en registros formales y en la fórmula «If I were you»; if I was es frecuente en la lengua hablada.

El primero trata situaciones reales o probables («If I have time, I’ll call you»); el segundo, situaciones imaginarias o improbables («If I had time, I’d call you»).

Cuando la cláusula con if va al principio: «If you’re cold, close the window». Si va al final, normalmente no se pone coma: «Close the window if you’re cold».
