There is y there are son la forma inglesa de decir «hay».
¿Qué es there is y there are?

Usos de there is y there are
There is a park near my house).
- Hablar de existencia y cantidad: combinado con números y cuantificadores, o con las preguntas how many y how much.
- Informar de sucesos: en pasado y perfecto (There has been an accident).
- Narrar: los cuentos ingleses empiezan a menudo con Once upon a time there was… («Érase una vez…»).
- Presentar algo nuevo antes de describirlo: primero there is y después it: There’s a cat in the garden. It’s black. («Hay un gato en el jardín. Es negro.»).
Errores típicos de los hispanohablantes
- *There are a book. Con un solo elemento, there is: There is a book.
- *There is people. People es plural: There are people.
- *Have a lot of cars / *It has a lot of cars. Traducir «hay» con have o it has es un error muy frecuente. Lo correcto es There are a lot of cars.
- *In the room is a bed. El inglés necesita there: There is a bed in the room.
- *There was many people. Igual que en presente, el plural pide were: There were many people.
- Confundir there, their y they’re: there (allí / hay), their (su, de ellos) y they’re (they are) suenan igual, pero se escriben distinto.

Importancia de there is y there are
Preguntas frecuentes
¿Cuándo se usa there is y cuándo there are?
There is se usa con sustantivos en singular y con incontables (there is a car, there is some water); there are, con sustantivos en plural (there are two cars).
¿Se puede contraer there are?
There was con singular o incontable y there were con plural.
Normalmente concuerda con el primer elemento de la lista: There is a sofa and two armchairs, pero There are two armchairs and a sofa.
