Última revisión: octubre de 2026 Por Conceptualia Categoría: Ejemplos

How old, how far y how often son tres de las preguntas más útiles del inglés: sirven para preguntar la edad, la distancia y la frecuencia. Aquí las explicamos en español con más de 60 ejemplos reales traducidos, las respuestas habituales, los errores típicos de los hispanohablantes (como decir I have 12 years) y ejercicios resueltos para practicar.

¿Qué son how old, how far y how often?

Son expresiones interrogativas formadas por el adverbio how («cómo», «cuán») seguido de un adjetivo o adverbio. Equivalen a los adverbios interrogativos del español y forman oraciones interrogativas abiertas, es decir, que no se responden con yes o no:

  • How old = ¿cuántos años…?, ¿qué edad…?, ¿qué antigüedad…? (old: «viejo»).
  • How far = ¿a qué distancia…?, ¿cuánto hay de… a…?, ¿hasta dónde…? (far: «lejos»).
  • How often = ¿con qué frecuencia…?, ¿cada cuánto…? (often: «a menudo»).

Reglas: cómo se forman

Pregunta Estructura Ejemplo
How old How old + be + sujeto How old is your sister?
How far (con be) How far + is it + from… to… How far is it from Madrid to Toledo?
How far (con verbo) How far + auxiliar + sujeto + verbo How far did you walk?
How often (con verbo) How often + do/does/did + sujeto + verbo How often does she swim?
How often (con be) How often + be + sujeto + complemento How often are you late?

Tres reglas clave: en inglés la edad se expresa con to be (I am 14), nunca con have; la distancia en preguntas con be usa el sujeto vacío it; y how often se responde con adverbios de frecuencia o con expresiones como once a week.

Preguntas frecuentes

¿Cómo se responde a How old are you?

Con el verbo to be: I’m 12 o I’m 12 years old. Nunca se usa have: decir I have 12 years es un error típico de los hispanohablantes.

¿Qué diferencia hay entre how far y how long?

How far pregunta por la distancia (How far is the station?); how long, por la duración o la longitud de algo (How long does the trip take?, How long is the river?).

¿Cómo se contesta a How often?

Con adverbios de frecuencia (always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never) o con expresiones como once a week, twice a month o every day.

¿Se puede decir How many times en lugar de How often?

Sí, a menudo son intercambiables: How many times a week do you train? equivale a How often do you train?, aunque how many times pide un número concreto.

¿Por qué se dice How far is it y no How far is?

Porque en inglés toda oración necesita sujeto. Cuando no hay uno real, como al hablar de distancias, se usa el pronombre vacío it.
