Oraciones con el verbo to be
¿Qué es el verbo to be?
It’s late, It’s raining.
Formas del verbo to be
| Sujeto | Presente | Contracción | Negativa | Pasado |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | am | I’m | I’m not | was |
| you | are | you’re | you aren’t / you’re not | were |
| he / she / it | is | he’s, she’s, it’s | isn’t / ‘s not | was |

Reglas
- Negativa: se añade not detrás del verbo, sin do: He isn’t ready. Para I am not no existe una contracción estándar con not: se dice I’m not.
- Pregunta: el verbo se coloca delante del sujeto: You are tired → Are you tired?
- Respuesta corta: se repite el verbo, sin contraer en la afirmativa: Yes, I am (no Yes, I’m); en la negativa sí se contrae: No, I’m not.
- Artículo con profesiones: en singular hace falta a o an: She’s an engineer, no She’s engineer.
- Edad, hambre, frío o miedo se expresan con to be, aunque en español usemos «tener»: I’m hungry («Tengo hambre»).
- Para indicar que algo existe se usa there is / there are, que tiene su propio artículo: oraciones con there is y there are.

- «*Is raining»: falta el sujeto it: It’s raining.
- «*She is teacher»: falta el artículo: She is a teacher.
- «*Do you are tired?»: to be no usa do en las preguntas: Are you tired? Las preguntas con auxiliar se explican en preguntas con do y does.
- «*Yes, I’m»: en la respuesta corta afirmativa no se contrae: Yes, I am.
- «*I am agree»: agree es un verbo, no un adjetivo: I agree («Estoy de acuerdo»).
Ejercicios resueltos
1. Completa con am, is o are: «My cousins ___ from Cádiz».
My cousins es plural (equivale a they): are.
2. Pon en negativa: «The water is warm».
Se añade not tras el verbo, sin do: The water isn’t warm (o is not).
3. Convierte en pregunta: «They are in the garden».
Se invierte el orden de verbo y sujeto: Are they in the garden?
4. Traduce: «Tengo frío y tengo sueño».
Ambas sensaciones se expresan con to be: I’m cold and I’m sleepy.
5. Corrige: «My brother is engineer and he has 30 years».
Falta el artículo y la edad va con to be: My brother is an engineer and he’s 30.
6. Responde con una respuesta corta afirmativa: «Is she your sister?»
