¿Qué es what?

  • Pronombre interrogativo: What do you want? (¿Qué quieres?)
  • Determinante interrogativo, delante de un sustantivo: What colour is it? (¿De qué color es?)
  • Exclamativo: What a day! (¡Vaya día!)
  • Pronombre relativo con el sentido de «lo que»: What I need is rest (Lo que necesito es descansar).

En una oración interrogativa directa, what va al principio y le sigue el auxiliar (do, does, did, is, are, can…) antes del sujeto.

Reglas de what

Estructura Ejemplo Español
What + auxiliar + sujeto + verbo? What do you think? ¿Qué opinas?
What + verbo? (what es sujeto, sin auxiliar) What happened? ¿Qué pasó?
What + sustantivo + auxiliar + sujeto + verbo? What films do you like? ¿Qué películas te gustan?
What + be + sujeto + like? What is Lisbon like? ¿Cómo es Lisboa?
What + a/an + adjetivo + sustantivo contable singular! What a nice house! ¡Qué casa tan bonita!
What + adjetivo + plural o incontable! What nice people! ¡Qué gente tan maja!
  • What o which: what pregunta entre posibilidades abiertas (What sports do you like?); which, entre un número limitado de opciones (Which do you prefer, tea or coffee?).
  • «¿Cuál es…?» se dice casi siempre What is…?: What’s your address?, no Which is your address?
  • Preposición al final: en inglés la preposición suele quedarse al final de la pregunta: What are you talking about? (¿De qué hablas?).

Tipos de what según su función

  • Interrogativo pronombre: sustituye a la información que se pide (What did you buy?).
  • Interrogativo determinante: acompaña a un sustantivo (What size?, What time?).
  • Exclamativo: intensifica una cualidad; con contables en singular exige a/an (What a car!), con plurales e incontables, no (What cars!, What weather!).
What you said is true).

  • *Which is your name? Para «¿Cuál es tu nombre?» se usa What’s your name?
  • *How is your brother? para preguntar cómo es alguien. Esa pregunta se interesa por su salud; para su carácter se dice What’s your brother like?
  • *I don’t know what is it. En las preguntas indirectas no hay inversión: I don’t know what it is.
  • *What a nice weather! Weather es incontable y no admite artículo: What nice weather!
  • *The thing what I want… Después de un sustantivo se usa that o which: The thing that I want…, o simplemente What I want…
  • *What hour is it? Calco de «¿Qué hora es?»; lo correcto es What time is it?

Ejercicios resueltos

★ Practica paso a paso

1. Traduce al inglés: «¿Cuál es tu dirección?».

What’s your address?

2. Corrige el error: «Can you tell me what time is it?».

En la pregunta indirecta el sujeto va antes del verbo: Can you tell me what time it is?

3. Completa con what o what a: «___ terrible film!» y «___ terrible music!».

What a terrible film! (contable singular) y What terrible music! (incontable).

4. Escribe la pregunta para esta respuesta: «She’s tall, with long dark hair».

Se describe el aspecto físico: What does she look like?

5. Identifica la función de what en «What you need is more sleep».

6. Elige what o which: «___ bus goes to the airport, the 5 or the 12?».

Hay solo dos opciones: Which bus goes to the airport?

Importancia de what

Para seguir practicando preguntas, repasa los ejemplos con how many y how much, las oraciones con can y can’t y los ejemplos con this, that, these y those.

Preguntas frecuentes

¿Qué diferencia hay entre what y which?

What pregunta entre opciones abiertas o no especificadas (What do you want to eat?), mientras que which elige entre un grupo limitado y conocido (Which one, the red or the blue?).

¿Cómo se dice «¿Cómo es…?» en inglés?

Con What + be + sujeto + like?: What’s your town like? Si la pregunta es solo por el aspecto físico, se usa What does he look like?

¿Cuándo se pone a o an después de what en una exclamación?

Solo con sustantivos contables en singular: What a day! What an idea! What awful weather!

En contextos formales o con desconocidos es mejor decir Sorry?, Pardon? o Sorry, what did you say?
